MATARIKI COLLECTION

Ngā mata o te ariki o Tāwhirimātea

This collection was created to respresent each whetu in the cluster of stars, known as Matariki. We recgognise that different whetu can be seen from different locations and with this in mind, have tried to be considerate of all.

Matariki - The Mother of the cluster; she represents health, well-being and a gathering of people. She signifies reflection & hope. Matariki was the first design completed during a time of reflection and growth. Her karu (3rd eye moko) signifies her position within the cluster. Her hair represents her mana and is a representation of growth and whakapapa.
Rehua - Whakapapa shared with Matariki, their children form the cluster. Wings that burn red and orange, formed to heal.
Waitī - The twin to Waitā; she represents fresh waters (rivers, lakes, etc.) and all living creatures within. Her design was inspired by fresh water Tuna (eel).
Waitā - Known as the twin to Waiti; he represents the ocean and all creatures of the sea. His hair represents a Kina; a common favourite food among our Māori people.
Waipuna-ā-rangi - Meaning 'water that pools in the sky' Waipuna-`a-rangi is associated with the rain. The deep cloud in the sky. Cleaning and Clearing.
Tupuānuku - Associated with food grown within the ground for harvesting. Hence the cute kumara hei taringa (sweet potato earrings).
Tupuārangi - Associated with everything that grows above the ground (fruits, berries, birds, etc.). This is represented with the manu in his hair and berries on his taonga.
Ururangi - Meaning 'winds of the sky' he is connected to the wind. His moko representing Ngā Hau e Whā (the four winds).
Pōhutukawa - Connected to all those that have passed on. This is demonstrated with the spirit design and pohutukawa flower.
Hiwa-i-te-rangi - Known as the wishing star, she is connected to wishes, goals, dreams & aspirations. She represents the power of speaking your ambitions, and further putting them to action.
